Ask the Experts > Ice build up on roof

Myself, along with a number of neighbours and some family members have had experience this winter with ice buildup on roofs, that has eventually lead to leaks through the roof and water damage.

My question is twofold: what are the type of companies that one can hire to remove the ice and snow from roofs when this happens; and 2. what is the best way to prevent this from happening in the first place?

Also, maybe Sheri can do an article on this for her section in the Herald. I spoke with one contractor that had at least 500 jobs on his plate dealing with this issue so it seems very prevalent this year in particular.

Judy , this has been a very bad winter for roofs .My advice is that if you do clear your roof ,hire a professional roofer so that damage to your roof and existing shingles does not occur during the clearing process.. As for prevention in the first place, I would suggest that if you redo your roof in the future that you install "Ice and Water Shield " over the entire roof and not just over the first meter. It will cost a little more but with our crazy winters I think it is well worth the money .Sherry tells me she has done the article .Cheers Paul
